Chamonix - Your Stay in Franschhoek
About the Hotel
Rooms and Suites
Chamonix offers several accommodation options spread across the estate, including the Marco Polo Lodge, Forest Suites, Panorama Suite, and Hadida Lodge. Rooms are tastefully decorated and fully equipped. All have a private bathroom with free toiletries and a hairdryer, plus a flat-screen TV with satellite channels. Some rooms feature a seating area, balcony, or patio with views of the mountains or lake. The Marco Polo Suite opens onto a large patio with mountain views. The Panorama Suite includes a kitchenette and a sunbathing deck. Note: there is no fridge or minibar in the rooms, and some rooms lack bedside lamps. A vehicle is necessary as the accommodations are spread out.
Dining Options
Breakfast is served each morning in the main building, offering cooked and cold options around a communal dining table. The onsite Arkeste Restaurant specializes in fine dining using seasonal ingredients and serves lunch and dinner. Reservations are essential, and it is about a 2 km drive from the lodge. Wine tasting is conducted in the historic Blacksmith's Cottage, built in the late 18th century, or in the restaurant. Guests can sample award-winning wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and a range of white and red blends. A reserve tasting and a chocolate pairing are available. Guests receive a generous discount on wine purchases.
Leisure and Activities
The estate features an outdoor swimming pool with mountain views, along with pool towels and loungers. Guests can walk through the vineyards and along mountain paths. Wine tasting and cellar tours are available, led by knowledgeable staff. The farm covers 300 hectares on the eastern slopes of the Franschhoek mountains. Note: there are no longer game drives or a game reserve on the property. The pool area is well maintained. Some guests have noted that the estate is undergoing replanting of vineyards, with heavy machinery operating on site. The air conditioning in some rooms may not work properly, and the driveways can be bumpy.
Location and Access
Chamonix is located about 5 km from the town of Franschhoek, up a hill. You need a car to reach the estate and to move between lodges and the main building. The town centre has shops, restaurants, and the wine tram stop (a 30-40 minute walk downhill). Cape Town International Airport is 72 km away (about an hour's drive), and Stellenbosch is within 35 minutes' drive. The estate sits at the base of the Franschhoek mountains, with views of the valley. The road from the gate to the lodges is unpaved and can be rough; it is not lit at night. Ubers are hard to find in the evening, so a private car or taxi is recommended.
Services and Staff
Staff at Chamonix are friendly and helpful, with special mention of Brywell, Natasha, and John. Breakfast is included and served from 8:00 to 10:00. The main building has a shared lounge/TV area with a log fire and a communal dining space. The property provides a safety deposit box, and free WiFi is available throughout. Check-in is by appointment, and the staff are on duty until about 18:00. After that, the lodge is unattended. No room service, business center, or babysitting services are offered. Parking is free and accessible. The estate can provide invoice upon request. Some guests have noted that the property appears understaffed and dated due to planned redevelopment.
